New weather maps have sparked new blizzard fears as the latest models show snow covering the UK, with one area submerged in nearly half a metre of the white stuff. January is set to begin in a particularly wintry fashion, as people across the county will see their mercury drop to well below freezing, bracing for widespread snowfall, frost, and ice all just days away from causing disruption.

The latest models by WX Charts show the blizzard-like snow spreading across the nation, reaching as far down as London, with major cities like Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow all expecting a covering. The forecasters‘ chart shows the Arctic blast pushing down the UK at midnight on January 9, when nearly all of Britain can expect some wintry showers, with only areas in Cornwall and the South East of England coming out unscathed.

Snow is expected to continue to fall throughout the night and into the morning, with many waking up to a covering, although some will be much worse affected than others.

Areas in Northern Scotland and the Highlands are set to be the worst affected, with areas around Ullapool forecast to be hit with as much as 44cm.

Elsewhere in the UK, Carmarthenshire is shown picking up around 20cm, while Snowdonia and North Wales could see up to 15cm, especially over higher routes where temperatures drop to well below freezing.

Much of central England can expect very minor disruption, with only a few centimetres remaining by the time people wake up.

King’s Lynn in Norfolk is set to be England’s worst-affected area, forecast to be smothered in 9cm of snow, while Staffordshire will also see around 7cm when people wake up for their morning commute.

The Met Office has already issued its first snow and ice weather warning for the year, affecting areas in Northern Scotland on New Year’s Day.

Looking into January, the national forecaster warned: “Cold northerly winds dominate across the UK in the first week of January.

“These will bring wintry showers (often of snow) to many coastlines (and areas just inland of these) that are exposed to onshore winds.

“ Day-to-day changes in wind direction will change the places most exposed to the showers, but many inland locations across central and southern areas will remain mostly dry but cold – some more coherent bands of rain, sleet and snow working south at times.

“Into the second week of January, slightly milder conditions will attempt to move in from the west, with a risk of further snow on the leading edge of these turning to rain. A colder regime is more likely in the north, with average to just below average in the south.”
