The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the partial closure of several major roads in Nairobi to support ongoing bridge construction projects. The works, the authority says, will improve urban mobility while also enhancing road safety for motorists and pedestrians.
Among the affected routes are Kenyatta Avenue/Valley Road/Jakaya Kikwete Road, Haile Selassie Avenue, and Ngong Road. Diversions are expected to run from one week to eight months, depending on the specific location of the works.
KURA said the interventions form part of its wider infrastructure upgrade programme, which aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion across the city. In a statement, the agency called on drivers to take note of the changes and to use alternative routes.
The authority also noted that a section of Kenyatta Avenue/Valley Road/Jakaya Kikwete Road will be partially closed from Friday, June 12, 2026, to Friday, February 12, 2027, lasting for eight months. The closure will give contractors room to carry out the bridge construction while maintaining safety on the ground.
Motorists have been advised to follow the diversion plans and to cooperate with traffic police officers and marshals deployed in the affected areas.
A section of Haile Selassie Avenue will also close partially from Friday, June 12, 2026, to Monday, October 12, 2026, for four months. KURA said the works support ongoing bridge construction and aim to limit long-term disruption once the projects end.
The authority urged road users to plan their trips in advance and to follow all traffic management directions. It added that clear diversion routes will guide motorists through the affected areas, with traffic police and marshals on the ground to manage movement and reduce inconvenience.
KURA also announced a short-term partial closure on Ngong Road from Thursday, June 11, 2026, to Thursday, June 18, 2026. The closure, expected to last one week, will allow contractors to install twin cross culverts along the stretch between Windy Ridge and Westwood Park Road.
KURA apologised for any inconvenience the closures may cause, saying the interventions are necessary to transform urban mobility and strengthen long-term road infrastructure in Nairobi. The authority urged motorists to remain patient, observe traffic instructions, and use alternative routes where possible.
